I do too, but that's not an option. Republicans know how to use power.

The inherent hypocrisy in the Senate GOP's reversal of their prior position. They claimed then that voting on a SCOTUS nominee would deny the people a say the last time a vote was before an election.
-
I understand that critique, but if they're going to force through this vote, far better to do it before the election, no?

What is a "negative legitimacy" effect, though, in practical terms?

The Republican argument in 2016 was that the SCOTUS seat itself was on the ballot, at least by proxy. Which is different than saying the president and Senate should be accountable; that would have meant a vote on Garland.

"Democratic accountability" is a ruse, the ad-hoc justification the GOP came up with to block Garland, so there's no sense working out the details of when that claim applies or doesn't. All we learn here is that it was purely ideological, which we already knew anyway

I also don’t understand why the republicans are trying to get it done before the election. Are there republican senators that would only vote for the nominee due to the upcoming election, that wouldn’t after?

Days ago, I read somewhere that it was thought the Republicans might not have the votes if Trump loses. I can’t imagine why not, though.
