It's literally the quantum unit of political sacrifice—in that there's no sacrifice you could make that is smaller—but I see even people who believe we're halfway to fascism refusing to help worthy campaigns because they might get mildly annoyed.https://twitter.com/SteveBellovin/status/1312911854121951233 …

Because it IS fucking annoying, mostly because it shows a serious lack of respect. Giving a donation to a candidate, no matter how worthy, gets you put on a global “sucker” list that will cause every scam-PAC and hopeless candidate to send you begs for money.

People are mining public filings and reselling that information. It's illegal and unethical, but that's what happens. Don't assume that whatever campaign you gave to sold you out.

How is it that the last time I gave to the Great Slate, every one of those campaigns has been hounding me ever since? Despite unsubscribes? It’s definitely made me hesitant to contribute again; indeed, I haven’t. This is your ball game. Do with this information what you will.

I don't really understand this question. Any charity or political campaign you give to is going to hit you up forever after for further donations, because there's a good chance you'll make them. This is different than sharing data with third parties.
