I don't think people realize what an astronomical fundraising number Democratic campaigns are going to post this quarter, pretty much all of it driven by the death of Justice Ginsburg

It's really upsetting. People are pointing to the amount of money being raised as a triumph, but there are SO many more-useful things that a society could spend its money on instead of a goddamned black hole of a campaign finance racket.

You cannot do anything else if you cannot save US democracy. That is the fundamental, existential threat right now. This is why Biden became the nominee. Save Democracy first. Policy after.

So are you saying my dollars are actually somewhat wasted at this point, for deep down-ballot races?
-
My honest answer is I don't know. It depends very much on how the candidate is spending it, and a lot of people downballot don't have any experience running a campaign

I don't think it'll be the norm in every election. 2020 is unique, and there is 4 years of pent up existential fears and rage and a determination to save democracy that's driving a lot of people to donate.

how do we unbreak the system? Is it fixable without a constitutional amendment overruling Citizens United?
-
The problem I'm discussing here isn't even Citizens United (that's a different bad problem). I like public election funding laws like Maine's, but I need to study more before I have any kind of intelligent answer.

Too much focus on the system. Two parties, money, blah blah blah. What actually matters is the will to use the tools available to us. And right now, thank the elder gods below, we are using those tools.
