I was going to look into some of those Socialist Workers Party performances, especially the 1976 Buchanan County VA one (5%, 1% statewide). For 1984, Mason was an African-American from Webster County KY, two counties north of Todd, tho he moved away young: https://nkaa.uky.edu/nkaa/items/show/1888 …

So it's possible he had family/connections in Todd, but I think it's more likely there were ballot design issues. Mason got 2.6% out of 9.6% total for 3rd parties in Todd, & the next closest county in KY only had 1.7% for 3rd parties TOTAL.. Seems like a hard to explain gap.

The 5% Camejo performance in 1976, also for the Socialist Workers, in Buchanan County VA seems less likely to be caused by ballot issues because he actually got 1% statewide so that's not a huge gap. Been meaning to make a map of that performance, dig up any old news articles...

Buchanan is in the little Appalachian "tail" of western VA, so I'm hoping the protest votes are part of some sort of wider pattern of Appalachian Democrats disillusioned with the Dems/GOP, labor voters who were willing to vote for a Socialist/Workers Party. But need 2 investigate

I've been out there! I've been obsessed with Haysi in Dickenson county (~78% Obama 08 -> 23% Clinton 16) for literally a decade now.
