I don't disagree with the sentiment, but one part is wrong: The US does not have the oldest consecutively running democracy today. That belongs to either San Marino or Iceland depending on how you count it. Isle of Man & Britain next, then the US is 7th. https://www.oldest.org/politics/democracies/ …https://twitter.com/Pinboard/status/1310956625499430920 …

So you admit you are wrong? It is not the oldest democracy still in existence.

Pedantically, the ancient Athenians had a democracy, while neither the UK nor US do. But if a republic run on democratic principles is a democracy, so is a constitutional monarchy run on democratic principles. The UK's democratic thing is older than the US's democratic thing.

The whole debate has an urban bias, ofc. Most tribal cultures have been democracies (short term leaders elected by tribal councils, hereditary "chiefs" only having ceremonial duties etc.)

Americans commonly confuse republic with democracy. The US may (or may not) be one of the oldest republics, but there are plenty of democracies, including the UK, that are much older.
