Lunch stop in Royal, Iowa. A striking feature of small towns in Iowa is the elderly population. Finding ways to keep young people in town with good jobs is essential to revitalizing rural Americapic.twitter.com/XT1MqsMmGh

Here’s a good thread on why most rural areas are the way they are now:https://twitter.com/sarahtaber_bww/status/1307372018921361410?s=21 …

Hey all! I'm a crop scientist who's been working in "real America" for decades. I'm also a political operative, organizing in the rural red-state South since 2007. This is absolutely spot-on. Here's my plan- speaking from inside the belly of the beast- on what we need to do. https://twitter.com/NateSilver538/status/1307349468245827590 …

Oh, wonderful! @SarahTaber_bww has talked about a lot of this before (2018 IIRC), but I see she has added some much needed points about bringing tech work in a post-COVID world, and the need for broadband!

So I'm a techie, working remote for 15 years, traveling for the last 3 years (3 months in a place, wife's a travel nurse. Royal, IA and any place like it are firmly in the "would never consider" category for a variety of reasons. There's the obvious, like lack of broadband.

As someone who loves the outdoors, where's the public land? All I see on the map is monoculture farmland for many miles around. Where's the (good) food? There probably isn't even a decent farmers market.

A town like this has nothing to offer someoone who can be pretty much anywhere. Nobody is going to go there and build anything. Why would I open a nice restaurant there? Nobody would pay more than $8 for a meal, and most probably wouldn't try anything new.

I'm sure real estate is cheaper there than in Vermont, or near the redwood forests in Northern California. But the reality is that people like me would not live there for free, because it would cost literally everything else that we like in our lives.

It sounds like you're not a good fit for small-town Iowa, and small-town Iowa is not a good fit for you. Which is probably lucky for both sides.

That's true. But as you said, there's a problem with attracting young people to a place like that. Vermont is very rural and attracts plenty of younger people. Perhaps it's worth looking at what those younger people want in their lives.

Absolutely, there are many problems to address. Broadband is an enabler. Good education is an attractor. Low housing costs. Not everyone likes crowds; some prefer close-knit communities. And Iowa has more public land than you may think.
