Lunch stop in Royal, Iowa. A striking feature of small towns in Iowa is the elderly population. Finding ways to keep young people in town with good jobs is essential to revitalizing rural Americapic.twitter.com/XT1MqsMmGh
From the other side, a lot of older farmers retire to towns. But the towns have been on life-support since the closing of railroads. If you know what to look for, you can find the traces of the rail network, leaving their mark on the land, where towns lay, how their streets run.pic.twitter.com/kH1qq4EZ9M
Correctionville had 2 railroad lines. I moved to there in 1968 as a HS freshman. On the left, there was a theater—already closed. A newspaper. After I left, the school (already merged with Cushing) merged with Washta, the newspaper closed. For a while there was no grocery store.pic.twitter.com/CMuIHBd1QX
Did it have a pharmacy? That's the healthy town trifecta in Iowa now, local grocery, local pharmacy, local paper
It did, a small one. The nearest today is Moville, I believe, per Google. Rural America has become ever more dependent on mail-order and the USPS. 50 years ago the 1400-page Sears Roebucks catalog was the Amazon of the era. But,
Deliveries were generally 4-6 weeks. Anything you needed soon, either had to be in stock in your small town hardware store or gotten from the city 30 miles away. I'm glad to see there's now a newspaper presence again, tho now less local.pic.twitter.com/FAyLuxUfug
People in rural Iowa aren't passive. When the grocery store closed, they got together and created one. I don't know enough detail to tell that story properly. But I think it's important to note that given the right kind of help, they can pick up and run with it.
Yeah, I fully believe it. A problem now is extractive monopolies like Dollar General coming through and destroying locally-owned businesses. Plus older Iowans who have to hold on to jobs they want to retire from, or risk losing health care

Very. I have to go get dinner. I have some thoughts I'll try to organize later about education, etc.
