He is feeding the crowd red meat and the media a spectacle of continuous outrage. I don't think the latter would be playing along if it wasn't so profitable. That is why they gave him free 'earned' media in the first place. It is like watching car crashes on inside edition.

Probably the best analysis of a Trump rally I read in 2016 was an essay by Dave Eggers where he compared it to an Andrew Dice Clay show: the crowd is there to see what crazy unfiltered stuff he says next, and he knows it. And yet, this is lost on the press.
