I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the hero worship and adoration was a significant factor in her refusing to retire. But I also feel like that didn't really ramp up until 2016, so my sense of this could be pretty skewed

She was diagnosed at an early stage. One of the reasons PC has such a horrific short-term survival rate is that it is most commonly diagnosed in stage 4 (after metastasis). There are effective treatments early on. I did think at the time that she'd retire, though.

The argument to retire would have made sense purely on age; the cancer just makes it more galling.
