Here's what I don't get. People were apparently leaving a lot in the tank, and Ginsburg's death unlocked it. Did all these new donors not think the election was significant before? Were they expecting easy victory? Or is everything just purely reactive and outrage-driven now?https://twitter.com/ShaneGoldmacher/status/1307469754391822338 …

Maybe you want to make your money “count” the most? Early means it’s spent and used and forgotten. The mailer or the TV ad is gone. Later means that when things really heat up as we get close to the finish, you’re making a bigger impact! Pure speculation.

Watching a tie ball game is incredibly boring until the moment the tie is broken.

What kind of thought process really *can* be behind political donations? No one knows how effective a political donation is, and people with excess money can't predict what else they might need it for in the future. I don't see how it can be anything other than emotion-driven

Part of it is donating is a personal therapy for me (selfish). The other part is my capacity to give up personal luxuries increases as the election stakes do- I’m probably not buying a new Apple Watch because of this recent donation.

It’s possible people are giving out of their monthly cash flow, not savings, so there’s a ceiling on each individual contribution?

For the same reason most people don’t do all their retirement saving their first year on the job, when it would be most effective: they don’t have the money all at once. The profiles of a 10x$100 donor and a 1x$1000 donor are very different.

For me, it’s because there’s not a clear definition of “everything.” We gave what we budgeted, and then talked ourselves into dipping further into savings for various reasons.

That's a helpful perspective; thank you for it
