I think part of why it gets focus is more that journalists are professionals who do this a lot, know what is allowed and what isn’t, and at least in theory are probably not doing the kinds of things that police typically use as excuses for their overreach.

journalists shouting that they are press remind me of Americans getting in trouble abroad and shouting "I'm American!"

Maybe we'd get more balanced coverage of the police if they bonked cable news reporters more often.

Would the NYT use passive voice about a knee on their reporter's neck?

It makes the credentialing authority a chokepoint for press freedom, and delegitimizes journalistic activity by the uncredentialed. Isn't this exactly what you've seen happen recently in Hong Kong? Police elaborately checking press credentials even though no law requires them?

Hell in many cities the credentials come FROM the department and might as well say “collaborator” on them. They have little to do with actual reporting.

Uhhh what? What about this instance or really any in recent memory display cases where “credentialed media” were trying to be given special treatment or deference from police, especially in terms of violation of laws? Am I missing something here?

Like did she do anything that was reported elsewhere which I don’t see here? More often than not recently (if not totally) are we not seeing police setting ridiculous boundaries that are way beyond what they need/are required and being extremely aggressive toward anyone
