Bizarre, sobering thought comparing 9/11 to the recent massive port explosion in Beirut: On 9/11, it was an astounding coincidence that we got footage taken inside the towers at all. It was only because James Hanlon and the Naudet brothers were making their FDNY documentary.

Everybody remembers the images of the second plane hitting the World Trade Center. Here is the total number of recordings of the *first* plane hitting the World Trade Center that are known to exist: three.

By contrast, there is footage from the Beirut explosion that we would never, ever have seen in an era before live-streaming, because the footage was taken so close to the action that there's no way the camera and the operator weren't atomized.

The images from 9/11 are indelible for good reason, and yet there are untold things we didn't see, because there was no way anyone could see them and have the footage survive. We're seeing so much more now. 9/11 with livestreaming would have been so much worse.

I think about the 2004 tsunami in these terms, too. It happened just few years before there would have been infinite amounts of footage
