Want to have an actual impact? Give money. It's a terrible thing to tell a Puritan country. I know everyone would rather live in the world where last-minute phone calls from out-of-state college students reading from a prepared script win the election.

Where do you give this money to? I'm so glad you asked! Here's a long list of competitive state campaigns in key swing state districts that in most cases have been outraised by their incumbent Republican opponent, and have budgets on the order of $100K.https://secure.actblue.com/donate/state_slate_omnibus …

And on this note, I'm happy to say we just got a $10K matching challenge for the "State Slate Omnibus"—that is, the full list of 41 state candidates we've been fundraising for since the start of the summer. Next $10K donated get matched dollar for dollar!https://secure.actblue.com/donate/state_slate_omnibus …

Oh, and I almost forgot—do you want to volunteer somewhere where it *does* make a difference, even at the last minute? BE A POLL WORKER.
@mattblaze has tweeted about this over and over, and it may be the best US electoral advice you can find on Twitter3 replies 6 retweets 18 likesShow this thread -
Oh man, I really triggered last minute door-knocking Twitter with this thread. I know I don't vote on a pandemic Election Day until I see politics mormons show up on my doorstep!

In 2012, while working on Election Day (volunteered for about 6 weeks total), I personally got multiple people to the polls. As in saw them walking back from voting after knocking earlier. Not all districts are the same as you point out.

Also you volunteered for six weeks! This is very much a thread on last-minute volunteering

True, but the last minute volunteers did help. We hit doors 3 times each that day. Mind you, this was Cleveland/East Cleveland, so it was really a GOTV operation at that point. Vastly different than the campaigns you are (rightfully) raising for.

I've done the election day door knocking myself and know it can be intensely gratifying. I remember driving a 90+ year old lady to the polls and how good that made me feel. But I had some personal experiences too that made me skeptical of how much we fetishize this activity

Totally agree. It makes sense in certain areas, and little sense elsewhere. At least it is better than phone banking.

My idea of door-knocking nirvana is when it's done on election day by experienced neighbors in a densely-populated district in support of a highly mobilizing ballot initiative. But we work with the materials we have!
