People who've been following along know about the Great Slate, our fundraising effort to help win the Senate by giving money to key rural House campaigns in competitive states. It's an indirect strategy based on the premise that Senate campaigns can't usefully absorb more money.
It's Google's political action committee (called NETPAC), not a charity. The donation is for $1,000.

Technically this type of PAC is a separate segregated fund ("SSF"). Contributions can only be made by shareholders, certain employees and their spouses. Company can pay for the operations of the SSF including costs of administration, and directs the donations but can't fund them

As to why Google directed this money to Gianforte, my guess is because they like to donate to politicians who aren't involved deeply with legislation they care about, because those votes are very easy to quietly buy. Of course I'm just speculating.
