My SO teaches at a school where half the kids are from the Santa Cruz mountains. Even absent the fire, something like XX% of them could not get enough bandwidth at home for remote learning without a lot of work. That's Silicon Valley -- imagine all the other places...

There are entire sections of just metro San Francisco that have no high-speed Internet options. The last apartment I lived in (outer sunset) required going outdoors to get cell service from a major provider.

But past me doesn't live in the US! I think it's mostly true of the UK, modulo jokes about BT's customer service. (And "city" is a stronger word there too.) Agreed that the US has depressing inequalities in this context.
