Is there established theory or ideas about how to build a brand in the shadow of a VC-backed competitor? i.e. your closest competitor has 10x the funding. How do you build a brand and carve out a niche in their shadow?

I feel like there's an idea for 'enduring' or 'resilient' brands that can survive against a juggernaut not through some form of differentiation or positioning but through being more human, and creating a stronger community (even if smaller).

I think one thing that works is picking a business segment that is profitable but doesn't have a high enough return to attract VC
