Republican ideas are so bad, and their policies are so disastrous for Americans, that you can see why they’re terrified of democracy and letting people vote.https://www.jsonline.com/story/news/politics/2020/08/10/wisconsin-sen-ron-johnson-hopes-stimulus-talks-remain-broken-down/3334232001/ …

you would think "here's why republicans don't let (certain) people vote" kind of answers the followup "how do they keep winning"

Because it's a fairy tale answer. It's much more pleasant to think you're losing because your opponent is cheating, rather than confronting the fact that you get beaten at the polls. The Electoral College sucks, but it doesn't explain things like why Republicans rule Florida

Funny you should mention Florida. The State Supreme Court just disenfranchised 1.4 million ex-felons. In 2000, the US Supreme Court disenfranchised all the voters whose ballots they forced the state to stop counting. It’s the capital of meaningful disenfranchisement.

That said, of course lots of Americans like things like very low taxes, no gun control, and individual freedom to ignore public health guidelines over collective responsibility to help each other. So you’re right, that’s a reason the GOP wins elections. And why we’re collapsing.

I wish we lived in the country where disenfranchisement and structural voter suppression were a sufficient explanation for Republican victories (often with the vote of the people their policies hurt most). I was angry after Bush won in 2000, but despondent after Bush won in 2004.
