.@mattyglesias wanted something other than Weimar to stand as analogy. How about this. So much beauty, so much promise in the years after Russian revolution before Stalin swallowed it all up. Here is The Twilight of Freedom by Osip Mandelstam. It feels relevant even now.pic.twitter.com/AoZnNK7NuT

This is a horrific misreading of the horrors of the Russian Revolution and ensuing civil war.

There was no beauty in the flourishing of the arts and poetry before the clampdown? I think you're wrong.

Yes, the denouement happened quickly but the years immediately after the revolution produced some of the finest poetry we have ever seen. Not excusing the revolution, the civil war or the rise of Stalin. But it was time of some promise, cut short. Unless you prefer the czars.

You'd have to be a moral monster to not prefer the tsars. I don't know what to tell you.

So, look. If you think I am a friend of revolutionary terror, I don't know what to tell you. Just that there was a period-however, brief where great art flourished in the most difficult times. The analogy was meant not to praise the post-1917 period but to mourn its losses.

I think that the core of our disagreement may lie in my belief that the seeds of the later repression were contained (and visible) in the earliest events of the revolution itself. I apologize if I accused you of a moral stance you didn't take

I am not pro-Lenin. @mattyglesias was saying why do we always talk Weimar when we want to signal national descent into madness. I just added Revolutionary Russia to the list. So think we're actually in agreement.

Yeah, I bear the scars of one too many discussions about how the Revolution was great until Stalin ruined everything. I projected that onto your comments, but re-reading them shows me you weren't making that point

I do think that the Russian revolution is an even harder period to draw contemporary lessons and analogies from than Weimar because it was just so unlikely.

That is why all analogies are useless. :-)
