I want to strongly speak out against this view, which I hear from too many directions. The idea that fascism arrives one week from today if we don't win some pivotal battle has been a consistently demoralizing force in attempts to resist Trump and his attacks on democracyhttps://twitter.com/BrynnTannehill/status/1299305312256757761 …

I wonder if some of the darker thoughts about an extralegal takeover of the country by a lawless leadership are just a way of avoiding the fact that we live in a country where about half the population likes what is happening and wants more of it

One final thought based on this excellent point. I remember the travel ban, when people filled the streets and airports in defense of neighbors and coworkers, and then we won a court injunction and the energy completely disappeared from the movementhttps://twitter.com/ckoppelman/status/1299440880777125890 …

Assuming long lives, it's hard to say whether this is the most important election or not. It could be. If Trump is swept out in a landslide, there is a lot the Ds can and should do to shore up the integrity of the govt. Hopefully HR1 was not just for show:https://www.congress.gov/bill/116th-congress/house-bill/1/text …

Please don't mistake what I'm saying for "there's nothing that can be done". I agree with the importance of landslides, HR1, all the good things.

Yeah, while I do think the election is crucial, it's no "Battle of Vienna"

The concern that many have, I think, is that the decline into fascism tends to be precipitous. As it gains momentum, social norms can quickly shift under mounting social pressures, and the very lay of the land can quickly change to radicalize previously moderate folks.

Consider how the frequent altercations between the Nazi Party and Rotfront framed the Third Reich's eventual power grab, and the quietism that seizure of power garnered from most Weimar citizens. The average person felt like they had no place in the milieu, and had unplugged.

if trump is swept out, it will indeed be a slow road back to a full-throated democracy. but if trump wins, the slide will be fast and steep.
-
Will it, though? What if Trump squeaks out another electoral college win but the popular vote results in a Democratic Senate and House? (Let's leave out for now the uselessness of the Democrats and focus on the fact that the separation of powers still basically holds.)
