Short of waiting to see whether it catches fire, is there any standard marking or indication as to whether a USB-C power cable can handle 96 watts?

That's an improvement over the wireless charging standards, which are the OPPOSITE of faith-based. If you have enough faith that it will charge your phone this time, it definitely won't.

TIL that USB-C cables rated for 5A are required to identify themselves with an "e-marker chip". So I'm sure there are plenty of 3A USB-C cables with e-marker chips being sold as 5A cables.
