I know this is supposed to be a dunk reel, but this strikes me as pretty effective.https://twitter.com/nowthisnews/status/1298132834792738816 …

You think Guilfoyle was effective? Everything else seemed competently executed but her speech was bizarre.
-
I can't get past her delivery either. The substance, though, and the other things seemed well done

It’s more alternate universe than gap. At my parents age they should be worried about cuts to MC or SS and not a little about covid. They are instead afraid of antifa coming to Tinytown, TX and murdering them. Argument about basic reality precludes any mere political discussion
-
That feeling of inhabiting a completely divergent reality reminds me of what it was like to be an evangelical

This is how I feel right now when I see people I saw as experts on the administration and its abuses fall into the trap of pointing and laughing at this week's convention. The party is saying what it thinks is most effective—and anyone in that camp is likely serious about it too.

It's most effective at mobilizing the already pretty mobilized.

Totally agree. Talking to Trump voting or undecided family members makes it pretty clear how afraid they are, just even about uncertainty and change. This messaging allows them to feel some sort of basic safety.

It's sad to see lowest common denominator fearmongering work so well. For a time politics seemed to have a veneer of propriety, and honestly I'm surprised it took so long for it to wear off.

this has been true since 2000, at least! It was absolutely true during the Obama years. The wide gap in understanding is not bridgeable through electoral strategy—the alternate reality that reactionaries occupy in this country is far more intractable

but good news! they’re still only 25% of the country and max 40% of the electorate! man if only we could expand the electorate a little instead of insisting “our democracy is fine and good as it is, actually”
