I CANNOT believe my husband put our cast iron skillet in the dishwasher, everyone knows you're supposed to leave it in the sink for six weeks while intending to look up how to do something with salt

don't tell anyone else but the pan is totally fine

but it's not SEASONED and you will have to use cooking oil, like an animal

Shakes head in southerner. It’s all about the “seasoned” pan. Proper cast iron should have nice layer of permanent oil that makes it work kind of like a non stick. Wash it and you got to re-season it.

By applying a layer of fresh, delicious cooking oil that is not older than I am? I will pay this penalty

I refuse to own a pan that's higher maintenance than my children.

Cast iron is easy, that nonstick teflon lasts about as long as you don't use it.

Dishwashing removes the oil layer that makes the pan non-stick, also making it susceptible to water penetration, and therefore, rust. Just rinse with hot water, dab dry, then a light wipe with some oil ready for the next use.
