Soot can be chemically conductive, shorting out components if it's really bad. Otherwise, it interferes with connectors and fan bearings.

Back in the day, when 40 MB hard drives were the size of washing machines (but much more expensive) it could destroy disk packs and the read/write heads. Today I'd worry most about cable connectors. And people. Also bad for solar power farms that feed datacenters.
