A question for the Portland police—what if someone had opened fire at this protest? Are they saying they have inadequate resources to protect their own central business district? I estimated the rioter/police ratio to be 1:1 so this says something about their preparedness

When something particularly egregious happened (like loud flash-bang fireworks thrown at the local protesters), the police would cynically play a recorded message about how they respect all sides' freedom of expression but expect them to self-monitor and avoid criminal conduct

The situation in Portland feels deeply tense. Regular residents don't seem to turn out to rally with the protesters, the police are clearly delighted to let assholes from out of town come in to try to break heads, and traffic just tries to route around it all without even honking

This is perhaps better than on previous occasions when PPB did hold a line been the groups, but facing the antifascist side with their backs to the fash, guarding them.
