Hope is a thing with feathers, but people need to put on a little more psychological armor against Trump's likely reelection. It's not that he has magic powers, but we live in a sharply divided country where one side has a significant structural advantage in the voting system

Agreed that it's a messaging issue; but I think the core of "the end of democracy," coming from either an alarmist rose emoji or Obama at the DNC, is to set the stakes, not to be defeatist. And I think that we're a nontrivial amount in to this long dance here.

I love your work and appreciate your opinions. You come from a privileged place of not having kids, and a flexible and relatively secure job. It is legit terrifying to think we will have to endure another four years. It’s not a helpful thought, but it’s one I often have.

My "privileged place of not having kids" is a choice I made, available to most people on this site

Only a tiny sliver of the population ever votes, even these days. If inflection points aren't gravely highlighted, we are primed for a frog boil. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boiling_frog … It may be true that we've got thermal wiggle room, but that fact only increases frog complacency.

People should also factor in that Trump hasn't really yet responded to the last 2 weeks. He's no idiot and can read a room better than most - expect a series of crazy-sounding but unbelievably effective responses in the next week alone. Only warming up, 2 months still to go.
