Nobody is being honest about the incredible economic and social transformation it would take to stabilize emissions, let alone reduce them, and all that is peanuts compared to getting to net negative emissions. And step 1 of an honest process is learning to love nuclear power!

It doesn't help that the movement to fight climate change in the US has now been welded to a social justice agenda that has nothing to do with climate, but guarantees the permanent polarization of what could otherwise be a cross-cutting political issue

One honest and very human alternative answer to climate change might be "let's spend a ton of money on mitigation, which will give us immediate benefits, rather than doing painful things to address the root cause of the problem, which will only help our theoretical grandchildren"

This is yet another issue where the American left's message is a combination of "eat your vegetables" and "I told you so!", while the right replies "America is AWESOME" and revs a soot-belching monster truck. It's just more fun on their side. And that's why I think Trump will win

This is maddening. It makes 1000x as much sense to focus on the negative effects air pollution has on illness, premature births, etc. We can start improving those in months. And the same policies help prevent global warming. With a few tweaks to the math, they can do so optimally

It's an easy out that absolves companies/corporations while forcing the onus/guilt onto individuals. The concrete short & midterm goals require top down regulations.

If people don't mobilize to demand changes, then nothing will happen to fix the situation. And I think that's a rather dire outcome. How does one fix tragedies of the commons again?

I'm convinced that consumption is a paradox that humanity will either solve or be destroyed by. Everything we do from cradle to grave is expressed through consumption. The more societies living standards improve the more they consume and pollute, creating an existential threat.

So at this juncture it is our flourishing on earth that is creating a threat to our flourishing on earth as well as many other creatures. And, you probably can't solve a paradox the same way that you would solve a traditional problem.
