@egavactip what do you think about the current fuss in the media around Qanon? Is this a moral panic, or a genuinely dangerous phenomenon, or something in between?

I eschew "dangerous," because so many interpret the word in different ways. It certainly is problematic. It's extreme, conspiratorial, deludes its followers, attracts the volatile & impressionable, & has attracted anti-Semitism. It also has a track record of criminal activity.

As for the media coverage--it's in a fad stage now. It would have been nice if there had been more coverage earlier rather than now after it has grown so large.

Thank you for this answer. Do you see something uniquely effective in its spread, or does it just reflect the power of any extremist/fringe movement to spread via algorithm and social media these days, if not actively suppressed?

Social media can help all sorts of ideas and causes spread but it doesn't guarantee their spread--and QAnon started in an obscure place and is not easily digestible. Given that, its spread is remarkable--possibly because of the cult of personality inherent in its nature.

Yeah, that's the part that I'm struggling to understand. What's the "John 3:16" basic gospel part of QAnon, the part that gets people convinced and then hooked enough to learn all the abstruse other stuff?

Like if you're a true believer, and I've never heard of it, what's the capsule summary you give me to try to persuade me to learn more?
