I get what you're saying, and I agree to a point, but it's not like there aren't other legit options out there. You don't HAVE to have a gmail account, or use Google search. But killing Reader is unforgivable IMO

It’s less a monopoly on consumer email services that is the problem than a monopsony on email servers—if gmail won’t deliver your users’ mail to its users (and it frequently won’t, for arbitrary reasons) you’re screwed.

Google has done an exceedingly good job at painting themselves as one of the "good guys" to the point where you basically can't even question this fact in a lot of circles. I used to argue about their excesses on Reddit and would get downvoted to oblivion every time
