I have been banging this drum all weekend, but TikTok does nothing that Facebook doesn't already do except being owned by Chinese people and making it okay by moving it to American ownership just underlines that "being Chinese" is the only thing they did wrong.

It's not "being Chinese" that's an issue, but being in the full control of a genocidal authoritarian state. If you don't like Nazis, then neither should you go to bat for the CCP

I do not buy that tiktok is an instrument of the state.

It's already been used that way.https://stratechery.com/2019/the-china-cultural-clash/ …

As have Twitter, Facebook and Google inside China.

None of those companies are allowed to operate inside China. Please dig a little deeper before you take your public stance. There is no moral equivalence here.

That was my point.

I don't get it. Are you saying that the CCP wouldn't dare compromise TikTok because getting it banned from the U.S. would be a bad outcome?

I'm saying that the Chinese government doesn't allow free expression from any company in China so what they make TikTok do in China is not a good predictor of what they'd make it do outside China. The idea that TikTok is a sinister move by the CCP to infiltrate the US is junk.

Replying to @seldo @Jer_Diamond and
Assigning sinister motives to every Chinese company because the CCP might make them do bad things is the Sinophobia I am referring to.

That's not sinophobia, but a correct analysis of how power works in China right now. It's analogous to distrusting LiveJournal's motives because of capture by the Russian state.

I disagree with that analysis.
