What Facebook and Google have done is more impressive than regulatory capture. By making surveillance advertising the mainstay of political campaigns, particularly in a pandemic year, they ensure it will never be in a politician's interest to pass meaningful privacy regulation

It would be illegal for Facebook or Google to directly skim political donations made through their platform, but it's what they are doing legally, with extra steps. It's funny when it involves politicians who make a career out of lambasting them, but the problem is structural
