I remember when everyone was lecturing me about how NYC shutting down two minutes after California could explain fifty thousand times the death rate because "don't you get how exponential growth works" or whatever. IDK if that fits what's going on in the Sun Belt.

Some of it is just plain old zombie lies. Like "NYC kept schools open for weeks longer"--I believe NYC and California schools literally had the same last day.

But reminder of how fast deaths spiralled in New York. Is that happening anywhere else? Will it? Why not? Is New York still a mystery?pic.twitter.com/j03HGlJsq2

Honestly I'm kind of checked out on COVID-19 studies because...it's so depressing...but are these differences really just from who re-opened when? Isn't the graph indexing every re-opening on to the same date?pic.twitter.com/YG8BfVqYr9

Locked account commented that basically nowhere is seeing growth rates like we saw before the national/international shutdown in mid-March.

I am also concerned that at least in the US the Latin American surge is being waved away with "oh I mean what do you expect, they're poor countries", when you know, many of them normally have quite good health outcomes, and anyway some poor countries seem fine.

An NPR article asked "why is Chile having a big COVID problem despite its high life expectancy and state capacity", and "answered" with "well it's a very unequal country, the rich have their own doctors". Ok...wouldn't that hurt the life expectancy though? Remember that part?

The almost complete lack of curiosity in press coverage is appalling. People are really invested in their covid morality tale.

IDK what's going on in Nicaragua. The government might just be lying there, as in Tanzania.

Yes! You tweeted months ago that there hasn't been a good explanation for why outbreaks occur in some areas but not others, and it seems like no one else is curious about this. Why didn't Georgia see an outbreak similar to the rest of the Sunbelt, even though they opened first?

I don't follow (and aren't equiped to evaluate) the latest medical research, so maybe the scientific field is looking into this, but the press and society at large don't even seem to acknowledge there's something unexplained happening here.
