The best advice I got long time ago was that you should not question the motivation of your opponents when you disagree with their views. I still think that's good advice.

The way I would phrase Dani’s point (or at least my peculiar version of it) is that it’s valuable to have a space where people from very different perspectives can vigorously disagree with each other without immediately jumping into accusations that the other side has been bought

That’s not to say that motivations are always or even often pure - they are not - but the worth of ideas is not reducible to the most cynical interpretation of the motivations with which they have been advanced.
