Apologies for what may be a dumb question, but I am a low-information celebrity hound. Is the thing with Kanye that we can make fun of him because he takes all the fun drugs at once, or are we laughing at some dude's mental illness?

You've pretty much nailed it. Though I will add that the jury is still *somewhat* out with regards to whether his announcement was an album release stunt and/or because he's been talking about running "in 2020" since 2015

and he stops taking his meds from time to time but he's quite self aware of his actions and mental state judging by this article with some interview snippetshttps://www.mercurynews.com/2019/05/28/kanye-west-admits-medication-can-help-bipolar-disorder-after-promoting-dangerous-myth-that-suffering-helps-art/ …

In contrast, nearly 20 years ago we invited Gene Ray, the Time Cube guy, to give an invited lecture at MIT. It was hilarious at the time (and he seemed to enjoy it), but in retrospect it was wrong and cruel. (I blame "South Park" for driving the zeitgeist of uncaring.)

This. Even asking him for the interview is, at this point, grossly abusive. Not a single thing that he’s struggling with will be improved by public engagement.

I’m glad you’re asking about this. Please say “has bipolar” rather than “being bipolar.” With disease outside of mental health, we say that people “have” not “are” the disease.
