Some people argue this headline refers to a cumulative death toll, which (absent some real improvements in technology) will always rise with time. I don't read it that way, since the death toll by that interpretation would be rising even if we cured the disease tonight.

The spike in infections indicates it will rise again though, no? I think people are thinking "infections= deaths," just a little delayed, which is pretty accurate.

I think that's the reason for the headlines, but I don't think the confidence in assuming rising infections will mean rising deaths is justified.

Well, is the fixation on death as the only negative outcome justified? Given at least 3 well-sourced and reviewed studies show a high probability of lung damage with uncertain duration are out there. Cases themselves represent a public health crisis.

I think that's a good point, but another place where public health messaging has failed is telling people just how severe this disease can be, and what "recovery" means.
