There's this weird collective decision in the media to pretend that covid deaths are now rising when they have been steadily decreasing since May.https://twitter.com/joshtpm/status/1280193910770368512 …

The spike in infections indicates it will rise again though, no? I think people are thinking "infections= deaths," just a little delayed, which is pretty accurate.
-
I think that's the reason for the headlines, but I don't think the confidence in assuming rising infections will mean rising deaths is justified.

I mean, "cumulative death toll" is redundant, since "toll" idiomatically refers to a cumulative total already. It just might be misleading to say "death toll" instead of "death rate" when you know people are going to infer from "rising death toll" that the rate is also rising.

I mean, most EU nations are now reporting in the single digits and the US is averaging hundreds of new deaths today. Unless you believe this is really going down to 0 fast (evidence does not support this), losing 500+ people per day is pretty bad. Right?
-
I feel like “500+ people dying in the 7-day average is bad” is a value we used to share, and now it’s an excuse to yell at journalists?

It's true that it can't ever fall, but there's "technically it's increasing" vs. "at current rates, another 70,000-80,000 will die this year". Your complaint would be stronger if it was the former.

Maybe the media has learned about the Simpson’s Paradox:https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simpson's_paradox …

I saw one response to the NC governor’s announcement of hospital occupancy rates say he was lying because deaths were declining. Crazy folks don’t need a lot but I wondered if deaths were declining due to learning how to treat it. Like MASH units learning bowel resections

The death Toll is rising, the death Rate is not. You are correct that a death Toll can never decrease, but if we cured COVID it would be static.
