Some people argue this headline refers to a cumulative death toll, which (absent some real improvements in technology) will always rise with time. I don't read it that way, since the death toll by that interpretation would be rising even if we cured the disease tonight.

TBF, the death *toll* continues to rise -- the number of daily deaths / the CFR are both dropping.

Not in the worst hit states. They’re just starting to tilt up in AZ and FL.

The death toll *is* rising. It's just not *accelerating*.

But yes, "if it bleeds it leads" remains true as it always has.

The death toll is certainly not going to get any smaller, unless some of those victims are up and walking around again.

Are hospitalizations rising? I haven't been able to find clear numbers, but have seen suggestions that death rate would lag infection rate by a few weeks, but hospitalization wouldn't as much? Or maybe it's been long enough since the "spike" that we should be seeing it already?

Pointing out that a number we're told is going up is in fact going down is not a gesture of disrespect to anyone.
