I can't help but see the focus on "we're the worst in the world!" as a perverse form of American narcissism, which stops us from pursuing clues to the weirdly uneven spread of this disease that could save untold numbers of lives around the world.

I find the lack of curiosity about what happened in Japan, and the incredible disparity between Eastern and Western Europe, particularly baffling, since those regions resemble our country and might free us from the dilemma of locking down vs. everyone getting sick

Do we know that "poorest countries with little public health infrastructure where treatable respiratory illness" avoided covid outbreaks? The places with the least covid testing are also the least able to collect reliable all cause mortality data.

I am a bit skeptical of that claim -- because we know, in the other directions, that interventions that worked vis-a-vis covid also were effective against other respiratory viruses; hence, the flu season ended months early in Hong Kong and Japan

Why are supposedly intelligent people still pushing this narrative comparing countries ? It baffles me. Especially since number of cases is obviously not comparable across countries. It is almost as if people wanted to push for a narrative instead of understanding
