It's a special kind of hell having spent the first three months of the pandemic in Japan, and knowing that all of this goes away if people are just conscientious about wearing face masks. It's like watching a relative dying from a disease while the cure sits on her nightstand.

I wrote a thing in March about the many reasons we should make it a social norm to wear masks. I wrote it while mask wearing was still against US medical advice, and waited until the official CDC guidelines changed to post it. I think it has held up well. https://idlewords.com/2020/04/let_s_all_wear_a_mask.htm …

how accurate are japan's figures? i heard a lot of stuff in the early days of the pandemic about them undercounting cases, and Abe is as much of a fascist freak as Trump or Bolsonaro so my default position is not to trust his government's word on the pandemic

They are accurate. We have the excess mortality figures, there's no hidden epidemic.

It seems like bars and congregate settings are a differentiator between states that have opened up successfully and those who haven't.
-
Bars are open and mask-compliance is not great here in Indiana, but cases keep heading down.
