zeynep tufekci Retweeted Oversight Board
So if I understand this correctly, Facebook’s new oversight board, which doesn’t have the authority to investigate what should not be amplified for instigating violence, will start working sometime too close to matter or after the US election? Convenient. https://twitter.com/oversightboard/status/1266736657509875718 …?

Or maybe the Facebook Oversight board has authority to oversee what should be removed or not amplified? Come on, we all switched to teaching online as best we can with one weeks notice—and Facebook’s oversight board cannot hold an emergency meeting now?https://twitter.com/oversightboard/status/1266736657509875718 …

I have complicated thoughts about an oversight board for Facebook, but if they do not hold an emergency meeting right this weekend, I don’t think any of my complicated thoughts matter because the board clearly doesn’t matter. I’m not wasting my brain cells analyzing vaporware.

Because I don’t think a boycott is the answer or, more importantly, plausible. Facebook is important exactly because it’s also useful and even essential—and depending on where you live, often without an alternative. I will write longer about this soonish.https://twitter.com/eric_weinberger/status/1266755988893380615 …

Trump and Zuckerberg just had a phone call "described by both sides as productive." Meanwhile, Trump's "shooting/looting" posts remain up on Facebook. Zuckerberg also made sure to go on Fox News to say he disagreed with Twitter putting a warning on them.https://www.axios.com/trump-facebook-zuckerberg-phone-call-d8d1016e-4e17-4906-b4f4-dc3e5c00bca7.html …

The “looting and shooting” post is still being amplified by Instagram and Facebook, following the mutually “productive” phone conversation between the president and Facebook’s CEO. Also, much less incendiary posts *do* get taken down all the time on both.https://twitter.com/teddyschleifer/status/1267325559584899072 …

The idea that Facebook is hostile to conservatives is absolutely not true. This is a typical top 10, though usually Breitbart does very well as well. https://twitter.com/kevinroose/status/1267466861416861697 …

Companies who want to affect change should line up jobs for Facebook employees who resign today. Smug mocking doesn't help them.

I'm confident the tech labor market will be able to absorb the flood of coming resignations.

You're into tech labor organizing, right? One thing unions do/did is strike pay. Likely many of these tech employees you mock don't realize that. Not everyone (like myself and others) grew up in a labor household singing Pete Seeger Weavers songs. Let's educate, not alienate.

After four years I'm done trying to squeeze blood from this particular stone, but wish you the best of luck in your own efforts.
