The cynicism and white resentment that Nixon rode to power will seem distressingly familiar, as will the self-destruction of the left. But maybe we can find clues there that will lead to a happier ending in our time.

I don't bring up 1968 to trivialize or downplay what's happening now. Rather, I think that exceptionalism can lead to a helplessness and loss of hope. If you think America is on the brink like never before, it's paralyzing, and it creates opportunities for reptiles like Nixon
