Demonstrating concern is one of the main benefits of mask wearing. It's not just a public health thing but a social gesture, which also has benefits, especially when public figures model the behavior. The hill this guy is trying to die on is really a pit, yet he keeps digging.https://twitter.com/brithume/status/1265055780484546565 …

Because mask wearing in the US has become a political symbol.

Thank you. I was teased about robbing banks while wearing a mask on errands because I was sick just last year. I had bronchitis, didn’t want to share it, & was asked where the holdup was. I was also called “modest” by the nurse.

I'm 100% down from this, but along with conservatives being anti-science and sort of shitlords, I get a lot of static from people about how shame is bad blah blah blah. Give me a fucking bell to ring at people going without a mask indoors and I will carry it everywhere. SHAME.

I know too many immuno-compromised people to worry about whether anyone thinks it’s ‘necessary’ right now or not. They can’t even go into a store to pick up necessities on their own. Wearing a mask in public indoor spaces while there is any doubt is the very LEAST we can do

At this point in NYC masks seem to have a healthy majority, if anything people get a bit ridiculed for not wearing them (though plenty of people don’t wear them, and there are way too many noses poking out). So while they’re not everywhere, they are normal-ish at least.
