One of the reasons I am so adamant about pooling data from our surveillance economy, CCTV and so on is so we can understand what people *actually did* and how it affected infection rates, moving the discussion away from calendar dates of various official lockdowns and travel bans

One thing that happened both in the US and Japan was that very popular actors and sports stars got sick in quick succession, and people suddenly took the risk far more seriously. Things like that meant far more behaviorally than whatever Abe or Trump said on a given calendar date

Finally, much of the "uniquely Japanese approach" of building consensus and using voluntary means to enforce lockdowns was political ass-covering by the Abe government—also a universal human behavior, and not something unique to the country

The “uniquely Japanese” explanation is always irksome. When written by someone outside the country it’s usual done out of ignorance; when penned by someone from within, often a source of pride. Both are uniquely grating.

To be fair though, people here do generally understand that epidemic disease is a real thing, and that it's responsible to take individual measures to reduce transmission. The US partisan idiocy isn't a thing here, apart from a couple of fossils in nat'l gov't that most ignore.
