This is another illustration of how deeply Google in particular is entwined in the fabric of the web, and how much Google's definition of privacy ("privacy is any sensitive information that should kept strictly between the user and Google") has become the accepted status quo.

There's a similar funny situation in the EU, where in order to opt out of some forms of Google tracking under the GDPR you have to fill out a ReCAPTCHA, which requires that you turn on javascript and perform free image classification work for Google.

For many people, the process of filling out the US census will involve visiting a government website over Google fiber from a Google phone, running a Google OS, in a Google browser, to submit results that will no doubt be tallied in a Google spreadsheet after a card sorter breaks
