I do agree that COVID is weird. I hope that yams or chrysanthemum pollen or TB vaccine or exposure to childhood chicken pox is the cure, but I don’t think journalists are going to crack the case.
What's confusing me is that I'm claiming metro NYC is the weird outlier, while the pattern you cite is the typical one.

If you show me the US map I don’t see many (populous) states that have the spread profile of, say, Japan or African nations. So whatever the magic is: it doesn’t seem like it’s here.
