Question for gamer twitter: if Space Invaders were written today, there would be a cutscene where the young protagonist watched their beloved father die by alien hands, setting up her character arc and motivation to shoot spaceships. When did this tiresome era of gaming begin?

None of which are “I feel liking shooting things” ?

They mostly make me want to shoot myself, which I guess is immersive?

I mean, if you want to shoot things and not have to endure the story and worldbuilding, you'd probably have better luck not playing the game that deliberately puts main focus on them. Like, 99% of games are less story driven than R* games.

They are also the fun open-world exploration games. It's like dinner theater where the food is good, but you have to watch a crappy play between courses.

Red Dead Redemption and The Witcher were the only games where I could endure (even enjoy) the story. Maybe add Deus Ex and the old Thief. But everything else is just abysmally grating soap opera level trash.

As far as relatively new games are concerned, Spiderman finds a great balance between story, action, and exploration. RDR was unplayable to me because it takes too long to properly enjoy it.
