Music twitter: are there any instruments besides guitar and bass where it's normal for even very advanced players not to be able to read sheet music?
It sounds like tabs are the norm for all fretted stringed instruments? It would be pretty trippy to see a cello tab...

Yup. The nature of folk music is that people haven't had formal training. Those who do (eg Berklee school grads) can (sight) read and write sheet music.

I always thought it made sense for those instruments because each note can be played multiple ways. Sheet music underspecifies how to play something on a guitar.

It does not! And you can always annotate any ambiguous passages. But it's a beast to learn for a beginner

For cello it wouldn't really work since fingerings are a function of hand size and expressive choices but yeah, would be weird
