I think both countries "crushed" in Eichenwald's framing of what that means. But as you know I believe that they succeeded for some (so far) unknown additional reason, and so I pretty much find the whole idea specious.
Ok but you're sort of talking about starting conditions which are random (or at least the reasons for differences are unknown) whereas bending the curve is a question of how you handle bad initial conditions and these aren't the same question.
It's overstating the case to say that because some places got off with easy initial conditions that talking about bending the curve is nonsense
