the japanese don't experience time linearly kathleen, they sort of bob around in a bubble of it, at any one point they might be in 1825 or 1940 or 2000, who knows?

pico iyer chose not to learn japanese so that he might remain entranced by the country. sure, to you that toilet sign might say 'closed for maintenance' but for him it is a fascinating journey into a land of wind and ghosts
