A sort of astonishing thing I've heard from several people who work in US hospitals is that nurses are facing a real danger of layoffs this summer, because hospital visits and elective procedures are down as people stay home. Does anyone have more systematic information on this?

The latest economic numbers from the US shows that, incredibly, health care is the largest driver of the current recession.https://twitter.com/texmed/status/1257427787679502337?s=20 …

Health-care spending dropped at annualized rate of 18%, Jan-March, most in 60 years. That was biggest factor driving the annualized 4.8% drop in first quarter GDP, the worst since the Great Recession. https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2020/05/04/financial-distress-among-doctors-hospitals-despite-covid-19-weighs-heavily-economy/ …

Layoffs in nursing are pretty common. Usually used as a way to get rid of the top bracket of them without firing them. Rarely because of genuine budget concerns, mostly because hospitals are run by the cheap (it destroys your body so seniority gets rewarded well).

With that in mind it doesn't seem that strange that this situation would be like lighter fluid for that.

I have definitely seen/heard news report about this from the U.S. I believe Marketplace on public radio mentioned it the other day.

Same in Switzerland. Some where even on short time work because the Swiss Army was doing their work in their stead.

Not just nursing. Doctors are facing the same. Reduction in pay/hours.

My wife has been a travel nurse for 10 years, always was able to work in an area she wanted to be. Since March there have been a huge amount of cancellations and almost no jobs available. It will likely be this way until next year.

No surgeries due to lack of PPE means less beds occupied. State of emergency means most regulations regarding patient ratios and work schedules can be ignored.
