Just-so storytelling about places that avoid coronavirus is proving to be an irresistible journalistic form. Here's a fawning profile of Kerala's "rock star" health minister, who sounds awesome. Kerala has had only four deaths for 35 million people.https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/may/14/the-coronavirus-slayer-how-keralas-rock-star-health-minister-helped-save-it-from-covid-19 …

But the state of Bihar, whose level of misgovernment would be comical if it weren't so damaging to people's lives, the death toll out of 99 million people stands at seven. https://thewire.in/politics/bihar-lockdown-migrant-workers ….

Here's an article chastising the west for underestimating the hardy people of Thailand, even as the author admits the unusually low case load in the Mekong region is a mystery.https://asialink.unimelb.edu.au/insights/covid-in-thailand-failed-and-foolhardy-predictions …

Here's a victory lap for Slovakia(!), the new model state in Europe for fighting coronavirus, with 24 deaths out of 5.4M people. I've seen articles that talk straight-faced about Eastern Europe's history of suffering making the population more resilient. https://foreignpolicy.com/2020/05/06/slovakia-coronavirus-pandemic-public-trust-media/ …

It's not a "just so story." They did the same things that other successful jurisdictions did, with the same results as those other jurisdictions.

They also got the same results as places that didn't do anything.

"Just-so" storytelling? What does that mean? You're not being entertained? And "fawning profile"? What does that mean? Anyway, I think the article is fantastically informative, IMO.

Just-so: the article claims to be true without much in the way of evidence. Fawning: doting, loving. The user then states a different region which has similar death rates but worse mismanagement, showing that management may not be a factor in this instance.

@Pinboard Sorry i don’t quiet get what you are saying.... the Kerala story is worth telling in a count try that has completely mis managed the crisis. What is fawning about it? It documents an admirable local system in an otherwise misgoverned country.

It implies that the low infection and death rate is the result of good policy, which is not supported by evidence

Why not an article about Turkmenistan where they've handled it the best way possible? By legally banning it. Can't believe the West didn't think of that.
